Mike Melnyk Photography Lauderia
Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with folks who have not only helped me enjoy the work I do, but in many cases have become my good friends. Here is a list of some of them.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass While I’ve worked at this event in the past for individual artists and filmmakers, 2008 was my first year as a staff photographer for Warren Hellman. He is the banjo player who had the idea of putting together this little festival in Golden Gate Park, and then making it free to all! What a wonderful guy and what a dream job for a music photographer.

Los Cenzontles I started photographing the school and performing group many years ago and I’m still a student of traditional Mexican music at the center (when I get a free Thursday afternoon). Be sure to look through the slideshows under all the tabs for lots of MikeM photos. Web, film, promotional photography.

California Bluegrass Association Once while photographing a festival, I heard someone running up behind me yelling ‘hey photo dude’. That was Darby Brandli, the president of CBA. Now they’re all like family. Staff photographer.

Alan Bond-The Backyard Party Boys Alan is a great mandolin teacher. Someday he’s going to teach me the secret chord that all great mandolin players know. Photography for ‘Rock’n In A Weary World’ CD and web site.

Berkeley Old Time Music Convention I love shooting events like this. So much great music and just as many great new people to meet. Suzy Thompson does a wonderful job putting it all together. I”m happy to do this gig for just as long as they’ll have me. Staff photographer.

San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival Here’s another yearly festival that I can’t get enough of. Nine days of fantastic music, shooting photos, racing around from SF to the East Bay and web gallery building every night. I think I slept about 10 hours in that whole time, but I’m ready to go again next February. Staff photographer.

The Stairwell Sisters Great old time string band and self-proclaimed “good time gals who love old time tunes”. My friend Lisa Berman has a Melnyk jarana, #003. Atta girl Lisa! Get their new CD ‘Get Off Your Money’, you’ll like it. Web and promotional photography.

Bill Evans and Megan Lynch Bill and Megan are really nice folks and lots of fun to hang out with. Oh yeah, they’re really good musicians and teachers, too. This is what a duet is all about. Web photography.

The Greenbelt Alliance I’ve been photographing the annual Bluegrass for the Greenbelt event ever since the first one. A worthy cause and very nice folks. Event, web, promotional photography.

The Crooked Jades Jeff Kazor has once again put together a wonderful group of musicians. Their latest CD, ‘Shining Darkness’ is just superb. Photography for web and CD.

Ginny Hawker Ginny’s voice leaves me speechless. OK, now I’ve got to play her CD ‘Letters From My Father’ again. Ginny is considering the use of one of my photos for her next CD.

The Barefoot Nellies Fantastic bluegrass music from these city girls. (Guess which one is the ‘laughing Nellie’) Web and promotional photography.

The Mighty Crows They’ve got the talent and the look to go with it, but if they take off their hats they look just like you and me. I can hardly recognize them. Web photography.

Chad Manning Chad can play fiddle. Really play fiddle. He’s good! The perfect fit for the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. Web photography.

Jim Nunally and Keith Little I’ve photographed Jim and Keith a number of times. Their work with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and Jim’s guitar work and vocals with John Reichman and the Jaybirds really shows the level of their talent. You’ll find photos of them in my web galleries.

Laurie Lewis Laurie and I seem to wind up at the same gigs pretty often. She and Tom Rozum are two of the hardest working musicians I know and on top of that, they make some real nice music. Web photography.

Jeanie and Chuck’s Country Roundup I’m not sure if Jeanie and Chuck have ever used any of my photos, but they sure are fun to work with. They know all the good tunes, and some others, too. Catch one of their musical get-togethers at the Velo Rouge Cafe in San Francisco.

Larry Carlin Larry has been a fixture in bay area music for a long time. Not only does he produce the Bluegrass Gold series of concerts, his music columns for the Califonia Bluegrass Association and Carltone’s Corner tell you what you need to know about San Francisco Bay Area bluegrass events. Event photography for Bluegrass Gold.

Sid Lewis’ Jamming 101 program is just what a beginning musician who wants to learn to play with others needs. While photographing his workshop at a recent event, I found myself trying to decide whether I should have a camera in my hand or a mandolin. He knows how to make that a tough choice. Thanks Sid. Web photography.

Nell Robinson and Red Level Just when I get a good group shot, the band lineup changes. We’ll try that again soon. They’re all fantastic musicians and great people.

Kirk Rademaker Kirk is an old friend who is the sand guy. We once took 2nd place together at the US Open Sand Castle Competition in Imperial Beach. He gets paid for playing in the sand all day! That’s getting your priorities straight. He introduced me to some of the music I love a long time ago when we shared an office. He’s also one sharp woodworker.

Belle Monroe And Her Brewglass Boys Belle and her boys don’t stop. Full on chargin’ bluegrass and all time fun folks. You’ll see them in my photo galleries.

Oh yeah, the bio. I’ve got to work on that. I guess I should take a picture of myself, too. Coming soon.
